Stuck on the 190 with Idiots

So here I am, trying to make the Homecoming meeting at 6:30. Traffic is slowing down, figure I might be a little late. I’m right by the Ontario St. exit, so I figure I’ll jump off there. You know the rest of the story. Armed man, obviously unstable.

Here I am, 15 car lengths away from a pretty serious situation, and pretty much everyone around me knew what was up. What do they do?
Get out of their cars to get a closer look.
One young woman was complaining about their destination. “Cozumel? That’s stupid. That’s not a Monday thing”
There were people on Niagara rushing up to get a closer look. Obviously they had never seen someone shot before and wanted to increase their chances of seeing it happen, or become a victim themselves. They were bringing their children for God’s sake.
I also found the comments about shooting the man because people were running late particularly irritating as well.
Hopefully there were no spectators disappointed that the incident came to a safe conclusion.

Wow. People are truly truly stupid. I’m so glad to hear you got home safely…

Paul, didn’t know you got caught up in the grid-lock. I watched on the news how people were running around wild, hooting & hollering (an embarassment to Buffalo) and I had wondered why the police didn’t back them off even further.

I feel the whole ordeal was by-the-book in bringing the situation to a peaceful ending. I’m sure, you being right down there in the midst of it all, it was probably a bit more scarier.

Personally, especially as time wore on, I would have found it extremely curious if people had just stayed in their cars and if the people in the neighborhood simply ignored it.

It’s human nature to gather in times of an “event” or stress. It becomes almost a communal event as whole blocks of neighbors gather in one place at the same time. Dark humor is also normal. Anyone seriously wishing for death and destruction is not.
