Time Warp

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

A friend brought in a couple of Buffalo News from May of ‘72 this morning, pretty nifty stuff. The wage & price freeze (some guy by the name of Rumsfeld was in charge),Ted Kennedy stating he is not interested in the Dem nomination for president. Also would not endorse anyone until the convention. John Conyers said Kennedy’s position was “Disastrous and stupid”.
In sports, the above mentioned wage freeze was throwing a kink in contract negotiations in the NFL, and Shaeffer Brewing was mentioned as being interested in naming rights for the new stadium.

Of note was an article about the Convention Center. The eyesore with the non-working sign. You know the one.
On 6 May, 1972, the News carried an article “Groups Opposing Convention Center Outline Position”
The groups were : The Coalition for Action, Unity, and Social Equality, Committee on Unfair Taxation, the Schiller Park Organized Taxpayers, and No Buffalo Convention Center.
they charged that

“… the Sedita administration has produced no evidence that a convention center would put more money on the tax rolls than it would eat up in new services.”

Best Quote

“Mr. Sinclair said the four organizations would probably not oppose the center if there was “one shred of evidence” that it would help the city economically”

Well they were right, Sedita was wrong. The only purpose that place seems to have is to give us a place to hold the world’s largest disco.
And last time I went by there, the sign was still dark.

Much Ado about Nothing

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I cannot believe people have their panties in a twist over this. Most local politicians would be dancing in the streets if they had their local hotel booked solid for an event. My town supervisor is looking for ways to use local codes to put the kibosh on the thing. For pete’s sake they already promised not to do the nasty in the restaurant or the pool, what more do you want? They’re even having a Euchre tournament!
The woman interviewed on Channel 2 said this event means they can’t do a “date night” there. Honey, with all the shows and fine dining in the area, you have a bigger problem if going to the local Holiday Inn is your idea of date night.
This thing is pretty much right around the corner and down the street from my house. Maybe I should leave the outside light on and stay up all night to make sure none of these heathen try to invade my neighborhood.
Or should I put on my best powder blue leisure suit, douse myself in Jovan Musk, and hang out in the hotel lobby hoping for some action?

Chihuahuas, Chicken, & Chorizo

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Had the in laws over today for a little grilling & chilling. Had the big charcoal grill ready to go with marinated chicken, chorizo, hot dogs. First to show is sister in law and the chihuahua. This dog is alright. aside from the occasional deposit on my living room carpet, Bella and I get along pretty well. Dog goes in the back yard, shows up at the front door to let me know that the side gate is open. Appreciated that. Then my nephew shows up with his pit. Nice enough dog, just hates chihuahuas, tries to destroy the one in the back yard. Chihuahua goes home.
I throw the last of the bag of charcoal in the big barrel shaped Kingsford. Problem is, the little stuff in the bottom of the bag all catches at once and superheats the grill. Next thing I know paint is burning off the bottom of the grill. The grates fit funny. And when I closed the lid, the nifty little thermometer pegs out in about 10 seconds. So the chicken went on the top rack with the top open. Once it calmed down a bit, all went well
So it was Chorizo, chicken, hot dogs, Ribs from Spar’s (highly recommended), and the usual assorted and sundry salads all washed down with a cold Stella.

I also like it when your company cleans up, takes out your garbage, and does your dishes before they leave. I love my in laws…

A Grandson!

Auron Casey Wasiewicz Slayton. Born 4 September at 1:25 a.m. 7 lbs, 5 oz. Big feet. Bald. Does not look like Winston Churchill. He was amazingly alert and talkative. Mama & baby both doing just fine. Photos later.
Maria & James make beautiful babies, and I am proud as all get out.

Prevailing or Fair. You Decide

Monday, August 10th, 2009

These two terms have been bandied about quite a bit lately, with some feeling that they are interchangeable. Here is the list (current) as determined by the New York State Department of Labor. These rates are usually set after a survey has been conducted by region.

Argue if you will about the County Legislature throwing prevailing wage into the mix, but they are only following the example of the federal government. See all those rules that basically say “You want Fed cash? Pay prevailing wages”.
Now as to the term Fair. Do I think it fair that a flagman on the roadside makes as much as I do? No. But then again, I don’t have to dodge cars moving a 40 – 50 mph in a construction zone.

The original idea behind prevailing wage rates was to even the playing field for those who employed union labor at a higher wage when it came to bidding on government contracts. Of course when trying to create balance, the end result was creating imbalance in the opposite direction. So higher cost organized labor actually has an unfair advantage over smaller firms, family businesses that may be able to provide an equal or better product at a lower cost. The free market that so many love to speak of has absolutely no sway in this situation.
So here are the figures, read and enjoy.

And by the way, these are private sector wages set by the government. They are not the wages paid to public employees.

Life is Good

When I was in high school, my family took in foster kids. Learning experience it was, I met kids from all ages had brothers & sisters for weeks, months, years. Unfortunately my fathers first heart attack shut that down. Never really saw or heard from one since the late 70’s.
Until now.
Received a comment on an earlier post, as well as a facebook message from Sheree.
And I am very happy with that. Hope you’re well sis. Hope to talk soon.

Glenn Beck – Comedian?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Yes ladies and Gentleman, the discussion is over. Glenn Beck – credible news and information source, or entertainer of sorts? According to the trailer I saw before Star Trek last night, he’s a Comedian!
Currently you can watch his buffoonery free on television. Is there anyone out there willing to spend 20 bucks a pop plus the usual handling fees to watch his simulcast?
June 4th, encore presentation June 11th at the Transit & Elmwood Centers. Order now while supplies last!

Bloggercon and the Weekend

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Bloggercon is on! A chance to get together, have a drink, and enjoy some great company. Pearl St Grill, meet up around 6.
I don’t know about you, but I need this. Between work and other assorted and sundry things, I haven’t gotten out much. I enjoy the company of my co-workers, but it would be nice to have some other human contact on occasion. So I will be there, and I hope you will too.
My son is moving into an apartment down the road a piece, so that may take up some time on Saturday. Sunday my wife is going with her Mom to take one of the dogs to obedience class. My Father in Law isn’t going, I guess they don’t don’t have classes for father in laws.
So don’t forget tomorrow. Be there. Aloha.

Baskets, Bowling, and Good People

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

This past Sunday the Tonawandas USBC Bowling Association had their annual Bowl for the Cure event. People came to Tonawanda Bowling Center for a bit of bowling, a bake sale, and of course, a Basket Raffle! As of right now, this year’s event has raised over $2,000 for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Team Cure, and the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This is the 5th year for the event, and it gets bigger every year.

And I would be remiss if I did not extend a heartfelt thanks to Kathy Slayton and her friends at ECMC. Of the over 125 baskets donated to this event, Kathy and the group donated over 90 baskets!

Thanks again to all who participated in this year’s event, and we ehoppe to see more of you next year!
