New Link

Friday, August 29th, 2008

And apologies to the new guy for not posting it sooner… I”ve been running a day late all week.
Anyhow - Straight at you stuff, the kind you like to hear from friends at the local pub.
The Irish is there, check out Nihil Obstat.

It’s the Economy, Stupid

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Not the lawsuit.Honest.
One day after Skretny’s ruling, one day after they claimed it would be business as usual. Construction and expansion at both the Buffalo and Salamanca sites have come to a halt.

In announcing the construction halt, Seneca Gaming cited the economy, capital market conditions, greater demand on the company’s cash, increased competition and growing construction costs.

And from the Citizens for a Better Buffalo?

Lippes said it would be speculation to say why the decision was reached, whether it was the economic conditions the Senecas pointed to in the SEC statement, or because their lenders were nervous about the lawsuit.

What do you think the delay on this one will be. Month, two months? Year? Or will it become an Issa-esque saga to be continued at a later date?

My Tax Cap, Not Yours

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Dancing for Budget cuts. You know, the “Save the schools, slice the social programs” tango. Lots of posturing, just a tad light on substance. Of course you expect little else from our reps at this time of year.
But this I found almost funny:

Paterson and Senate Republicans wanted a cap on the growth in annual property tax levies. Assembly Democrats want relief for only lower-income and some middle income residents. The stalemate produced no agreement.

What the hell should my income have to do with a property tax cap? This is pretty much pandering, or to use the more technical term, Bullshit. I would qualify as being eligible, but a cap based on personal wealth is a stretch.

McCain does the Grab and Run

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

He shows, he goes. I understand the efficiency of effort. Why speak to the people you want to lead if you already know you won’t carry their state? But it does seem a bit odd. Paying large amounts of cash to spend a few moments with someone whose actions show little more than disdain for you and your region. To me that would be a tad insulting.
Perhaps there were autograph sessions as well. I dunno.

Still in Business

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It ain’t over yet. And I am sure that there will be howls of indignation from one group in Buffalo, but what are you going to do? Storm the warehouse with federal marshals? This is one instance where lawsuits will not inhibit construction. So whatever happens, that area will look one hell of a lot better than it did before.

BTW, If the casino does get shut down, will the group responsible then turn their attention to the evil slots at the fairgrounds? Or is that area okay because the locals can be trusted to NOT spend food and rent money there.

Will the next step be a suit to ban low yield lottery tickets from economically depressed areas of the city?

Just asking. And no, I have never set foot in a casino. I just don’t think anyone else has the right to tell me I can’t set foot in a casino.

Adding to the List of Those Responsible for Mckinley

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Board makes noise, and little else.
Pursuing disciplinary action will be costly. No shit.
Believing Williams will pursue internal disciplinary action, or take any other action, other than declaring the situation “closed”, is like a kid believing Santa will actually leave a live pony under the tree at Christmas.Barton still rules. Williams is still here. And the kids learn there is no accountability among adults.

Nothing Better than the Blotter

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

We get the Gazette every morning. My wife reads interesting parts to me as we drive to work. Our favorite part? The BLOTTER!
You can’t make some of this stuff up, it’s so good. First one brings up memories of the old Cheech & Chong movies:

Police said Potenzo’s vehicle was in the left turn lane on Niagara Street, waiting to turn onto the Seymour Street bridge, when an officer saw the two men smoking what appeared to be a marijuana pipe.
Forbes looked out the passenger side window, noticing the officer, and he and Potenzo began making furtive movements to hide the marijuana, the report said. Police eventually found three marijuana bags in Potenzo’s vehicle.

And you wonder if the paper gets cash for “Product Placement” in their reports. As an example, we don’t just read that the individual had an open container, we read that he had “an open can of Bud Ice Beer”. I guess anything for a buck, ya know?

Can’t wait for tomorrow’s installment.

Just a Couple of Things

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Apparently the seemingly endless primary/steel cage match is over. I found Hillary to be well, brittle. Not a trait I would want in a president. I am pretty sure I will be seeing a fair amount of “Vote for me because the other guy is bad” from McCain.

Dr. James Williams is still in Buffalo. Can’t we find another city and trade him for like a 6th round pick?

This song and dance about the Hit & Run is absurd. Channel 2 asked the tough question “Is Lynch getting special treatment because of his star status”?
My question to the media would be “Would you clowns be all over this like seagulls on a french fry at McDonalds if it wasn’t someone with star status?”

And now I’m off to work. Y’all have a fun day…

Stuck on the 190 with Idiots

Monday, May 12th, 2008

So here I am, trying to make the Homecoming meeting at 6:30. Traffic is slowing down, figure I might be a little late. I’m right by the Ontario St. exit, so I figure I’ll jump off there. You know the rest of the story. Armed man, obviously unstable.

Here I am, 15 car lengths away from a pretty serious situation, and pretty much everyone around me knew what was up. What do they do?
Get out of their cars to get a closer look.
One young woman was complaining about their destination. “Cozumel? That’s stupid. That’s not a Monday thing”
There were people on Niagara rushing up to get a closer look. Obviously they had never seen someone shot before and wanted to increase their chances of seeing it happen, or become a victim themselves. They were bringing their children for God’s sake.
I also found the comments about shooting the man because people were running late particularly irritating as well.
Hopefully there were no spectators disappointed that the incident came to a safe conclusion.

Saturday News.

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Never you mind about the Plaza at the end, where it will be, how many houses will be lost, the pollution, etc. Our elected officials are making sure that our new bridge will be pretty.

Mayor wants to hire his own watchdog at 80k. Maybe a relative needs a job. who knows.

On a sadder note, Michelle has decided to pull the plug on her blog “News from a Broad”. She will be sorely missed, and I am sure we all wish her the best in her life.
And speaking of blogs, one of the reasons I go by “Pauldub” is due to the difficulty in typing my last name.
The Mothership (By the way, I see the office is for rent, did you guys move to Charlotte?) proved my point when they switched their sidebar from Blogs to Contributors. It’s “CZ” not “SZ”.
Geez, obviously not a Pollock in the bunch.
